The Jersey Shore

Growing up in Newark, New Jersey my family fled the city and spent summers at the Jersey shore. The summers were 10 weeks long and every day was special. After breakfast, we headed to the beach to just play in the surf, dig holes and build sand castles. Mom would bring lunch to the beach and after the required 45- minute hiatus from the water it was back to playing in the surf. With a 10-cent allowance the evenings were spent at the Penny-arcade accumulating points to be redeemed for prizes. The prices ranged from penny candy to a shiny new Schwinn bike. We dreamed of winning the bike but settled for the candy.

On weekends my brother Marc and I would walk down the boardwalk to Asbury Park where the rides were waiting. As a young boy, summers spent at the Jersey shore were like being in a magical land. Along the hundred and 120 miles of the Jersey coast there are picturesque landscapes laced with playgrounds for both young and old. Since 2010, I’ve been working on a photographic essay titled “Along the Jersey Shore”, which captures the romantic, sublime and often surreal heart and soul of New Jersey.
